PM Modi’s Maldives Visit Reinforces India’s Strategic Maritime Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to the Maldives marks a pivotal moment in India’s foreign policy outreach under the Neighbourhood First policy. As the guest of honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, PM Modi’s presence underscores the deep-rooted and multi-dimensional relationship between the two maritime neighbours.

During his engagements, PM Modi met with key Maldivian leaders across party lines, including Vice President Mohamed Latheef, former President Mohamed Nasheed, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and representatives from various political parties. This bipartisan outreach reflects broad-based support for the India-Maldives partnership, affirming that bilateral ties transcend domestic political transitions in Male.

Strategically located along vital Indian Ocean shipping lanes, the Maldives plays a critical role in India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. Nearly 80 percent of India’s energy imports and 50 percent of trade pass through waters surrounding the Maldives. Maintaining strong ties with Male is essential for India’s maritime security, freedom of navigation, and countering the growing Chinese presence in the region, particularly under the ‘String of Pearls’ strategy.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s long-term commitment to capacity building, development cooperation, and strengthening institutional linkages. The establishment of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group is a notable step toward enhancing people-to-people and legislative collaboration. On the security front, India and the Maldives have built a robust defence partnership, cooperating closely on counterterrorism, anti-piracy efforts, and maritime surveillance.

Economically, India emerged as the Maldives’ largest trading partner in 2023, with bilateral trade surpassing $1 billion. Indian investments in infrastructure, digital technology, healthcare, and education have significantly contributed to the Maldives’ development trajectory. Thousands of Indian professionals work in the Maldives’ public and private sectors, while growing tourism inflows from India remain a vital revenue stream for the island nation.

President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent remarks referring to India as the Maldives’ “closest and most trusted partner” signal a positive turn in bilateral relations and a renewed commitment to shared strategic goals. PM Modi’s emphasis on shared civilizational values, mutual respect, and cooperative development further deepens the India-Maldives relationship.

In an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape, this visit reaffirms that the Maldives is not merely a neighbour but a strategic maritime ally—central to ensuring stability, connectivity, and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
