BBC’s laura Kuenssberg unfolds the reason why EU will not step out from Trade talks
Laura Kuenssberg pointed out the move is likely to be taken by the European Union, which will come as a shock to Brexiteers.
Kuenssberg claimed Brussels is set to take a cautious approach to Boris johnson plans which risk overriding elements of the withdrawal agreement if a trade deal has not been reached by October 15. The journalist made the remarks on Twitter, as she shared a thread on the EU’s next move. Ms Kuenssberg said: “Well worth a read – suggests EU unlikely to walk out of talks on a deal – and look at a court case instead…“Chimes with a word from an ambassador yesterday who suggested Brussels likely to pursue the UK in court rather than go for an explosive bust-up that prevents a deal.”
The thread she shared was from Mujtaba Rahman, the managing director for Europe at Eurasia Group, political risk research and consulting firm, who suggested the EU is moving towards legal action. He wrote: “I think the EU is converging on a calibrated legal – not political. “However, there could be some flexibility in its implementation to address the UK’s concerns.” The comments come after Brussels responded furiously to the UK Government’s Internal Market Bill, which is currently being debated in the House of Commons.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen furiously attacked Boris johnson plan to override parts of the withdrawal agreement this afternoon. She said the UK could not unilaterally set aside the Brexit deal, which the Prime Minister agreed with the EU last October. In response to the EU’s tough stance. “The increasingly toxic relationship should now be carried to its logical conclusion with the total repudiation of the withdrawal agreement and preparations for outright competition and a trade war.”
By walking away it will give courage and hope to other countries in the EU to do the same and end this charade call the EU once and for all.
