Brazil: COVID and Bolsonaro’s changing priorities

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing popular leader who started his term with bold and speedy decisions seems vague these days.

In January 2019, Bolsonaro took office last year; he looked like a plan: rescue Brazil from social liberation, revive the economy from one of the worst recessions and Crush corruption. But it seems a lot has changed in just 20 months. Bolsonaro’s bold and speedy agenda is not like the earlier one now. His administration is trying to blame Coronavirus, but it does not seem to be working. A demagogue, denialist and illiberal provocateur — Bolsonaro’s’s adversaries have called him many names. He’s also a crafty politician.

Sketchy dealings, through his administration, led to the resignation of Corruption busting – Justice Minister Sergio Moro. Bolsonaro market-friendly initiatives – privatization, administrative reforms, economic openings and foundational tax reforms – seems nowhere these days.

“Brazil’s self-described political outsider is looking more like an insider every day,” said Fernando Schuler, a political analyst who teaches at Insper, a Sao Paulo business school. “He has no recognizable project beyond the traditional one of transferring public revenues and bargaining with traditional clusters of power.” Boosting the spendings to mitigate the global economic collapse was the right call. And, the COVID cash grew Brazilian average household incomes by 7% nationwide this year, the chronically neglected north and northeast have seen double-digit increases (24% in Maranhao, 20% in Piaui and 14.3% in Amazonas).

Indeed, Brazil can not keep going without getting stable aid. The internal Brazil debt is about to hit 100% of its GDP, up 20% since December last year. And, breaching the spendings would not be in favour of Bolsonaro as Former President Dilma Rousseff got impeached for gaming the budget in 2016. Guedes proposed a less costly budget – Renda Brazil (Brazil income) but may put 21 million families at risk. Bolsonaro’s Failed Diplomacy Leaves Brazil Isolated as Pandemic Rages.

The way Brazil President is dealing with Coronavirus is a strange situation. The President and his most loyal ones keep themselves remain in denial mode. Even the President himself has called it a “little flu”. Brazil is 3rd most affected country with the pandemic. Only Brazil bags over 4.3 million cases with 1,33,459 deaths as of 16th of September 2020. Two Ministers have already been fired for speaking against the President so far.
