Erdogan – Reclaiming The Ottoman’s Legacy

Recep Tayyip Erdogan currently serving as a 12th President of the Republic of Turkey. He served as a Mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998 and as a Prime Minister from 2003 – 2014. Mr Erdogan established the modern Justice and Development Party (AKP) being a conservative Democrat in 2001 instead openly taking up the Islamist policy as Erdogan belongs to Islamic Political Background. He also won 2 National Referendum in 2007 and 2011 which further expanded his image as a robust and credible leader. People of Turkey have been showered plenty of love on Erdogan as he continues to lead the Nation towards Neo-Ottoman legacy.

Erdogan earned a lot to his Nation during the decades of service for his Nation. Whether it is about strengthening Turkey’s image in the world or a robust foreign policy, he served Turkey best in the National Interest.

Barack Obama elected to office in 2008 and made an official visit to Turkey in April 2009 where Obama said: “I’m trying to make a statement about the importance of Turkey, not just to the United States but to the world. I think that where there’s the most promise of building stronger. U.S.-Turkish relations is in the recognition that Turkey and the United States can build a model partnership in which a predominantly Christian nation, a predominantly Muslim nation – a Western nation and a nation that straddles two continents,”.

He also added, “that we can create a modern international community that is respectful, that is secure, that is prosperous, that there are no tensions – inevitable tensions between cultures – which I think is extraordinarily important.” Though, the Turkish – U.S relations has not been much good with Donald Trump administration as U.S raised voice against Turkey’s S-400 Triumph air defence system purchase from Russia.

Turkey’s growth milestones

As per the latest reports, the country recorded a 4.5% of GDP Growth rate in the 1st Quarter, and Turkey is optimistic with a positive growth rate despite pandemic. Turkey is a charter member of the United Nations, an early member of U.S allies group – NATO, the IMF, and the World Bank, and a founding member of the world’s important intergovernmental organizations – OECD, OSCE, BSEC, OIC, and G20 (Top 20 World Economies). Erdogan could manage to maintain a consistent GDP growth rate from 2002 to 2007 averaged 6.8 per cent annually, which made Turkey one of the fastest-growing economies in the world during that period. However, growth slowed to 1 per cent in 2008 – 2009 as the Turkish economy got affected by the global financial crisis, with a recession of 5 per cent.

Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Turkey operates scheduled services to 315 destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, making it the largest mainline carrier in the world by several passenger destinations.

Turkey is amongst the world’s top ten destination countries, with the highest foreign visitors arriving from Germany and Russia in recent years and secured 6th position globally in terms of the number of international tourist arrivals in 2018, with 45.8 million foreign tourists visiting the country. Also, the people of Turkey witnessed significant economic and political reforms under Erdogan’s regime.

Erdogan started this journey of nationwide transformation with a landslide victory of 2002. Erdogan with his AK Party actively worked over reclaiming the old Ottoman’s Empire Legacy and could get the country out from an Economic Crisis first and began a step by step transformation into a robust Secular state with Islamic values.

At present, Turkey, as a country, sees some challenges ahead of it. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which has been involved in armed conflict against the Turkish state, to achieve an independent Kurdish state is a potential threat to the National Security. FETO and PKK are a significant concern for the Turkish government, which needs to be handled as early as possible.  Secondly, Turkey hosts around 3.7 million Syrian refugees – this is the largest refugee population in the world. Where it puts massive pressure on Turkey’s GDP and resources at the same time, it shows the generosity of Turkey as a country and sacrifices of Turkish Citizens.

  • I am surprised at such articles
it often stems from religious emotions with the author not knowing the facts of the topic he is writing on.
The modern AKP which Erdogan established in 2001, is not the same AKP which Erdogan rules by an iron fist today. Erdogan threw out almost all his road frıends who established the party with him.
Both National Referendums in 2007 & 2011 which further expanded the Erdogan’s domination were planned by Fethullah Gülen, when Gulen was invased almost all the Turkish states institutions, which was also by cooperation with Erdogan.
By that two referandum, Gulen could through out 60 generals and many other senior military officers from the Turkish army. By the second referendum Gulen could almost completely control the ministry of justice.
Today, the Turkish economy has collapsed, and the country’s justice has become a play a poppet in the hands of Erdogam’s.
I will suffice with so much comments, I consider the article lacking reliability.
It is not a dexterity to take advantage of the religious passions & feelings of poverty of the religious citizens & become the mayor of a city and govern the same country for more than 20 years, knowing that these people led the Muslim world for about 5 centuries & suffered from the corruption of their politicians at the time when Erdogan won.
